Former Ascension Parish Councilman and former Executive Director of the Ascension Chamber of Commerce Martin McConnell recently announced his campaign to serve as the next mayor of Gonzales.

A resident of Prairieville, he died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2008, at his home. He was 78 and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Religious service at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 22, at 10 a.m. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. He was an avid LSU fan and a 1948 graduate of Istrouma High School.

When Center Stage Performing Arts Academy continues its run of “Crazy for You” at the Dutchtown High School Cafetorium July 18-20, the talent on stage is sure to impress theatergoers.

Calling for the continuation of growth and prosperity, Kirk Boudreaux announced his candidacy for the Division B seat on the Gonzales City Council.

Brad “Plug” Lavigne recently announced his candidacy for the Division A seat on the Gonzales City Council, which will be decide in this fall’s elections.
The primary election will be held Oct. 4.

Harold Stewart, a 24-year resident of the City of Gonzales, recently announced his candidacy for the Division D seat on the Gonzales City Council, which will be decided in the Oct. 4 elections.

The Gonzales City Council rolled over the 8.55 mil rate for property subject to ad valorem taxes within the city, and renewed a three-year contract with accounting firm Postlewaite & Netterville to be the city auditor.

In discussing a basis for possible changes to the parish’s existing home rule charter, the Ascension Parish Home Rule Charter Commission agreed Wednesday to review the current charter as well as a list of recommended changes made by a 2002 committee tasked to review the document.

Cabela’s in Gonzales is participating in Voters Education Week, as representatives from the Ascension Parish Registrar of Voter’s Office will be on hand today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to register voters for the upcoming fall elections.

While Ralph’s Market employees filled empty shelves in the new store located at Pelican Point in Gonzales with products in anticipation of opening day July 23, graphic artist Katie Trosclair painted a floor-to-ceiling mural to greet customers.

The long awaited store has moved steadily toward opening day since the completion of  road work on Hwy. 44.

The Ascension Parish School Board voted during its regular meeting Tuesday to accept a $176.9 million budget for the 2008-09 school year, but not before adding $400,000 back to the budget for maintenance projects.

The town council unanimously adopted an ordinance Tuesday allowing video bingo to be played during sessions of charitable call bingo within the town limits.

A resident of Donaldsonville and a native of Barton, she died at 3:14 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at her home. She was 77. Entombment will follow at a later date.
